Exhibiting Artists

Joyce Frances Devlin

Location: Main Hall, Burritt’s Rapids Community Hall

Artist’s Statement: My work has taken many different directions over the years, from portraiture to metaphorical and decorative pieces. I return to simple landscapes again and again as they keep my purely imaginative work enriched with details, forms, patterns, textures, and shapes found in the surrounding countryside and in my gardens.

The large paintings are an expression of my time and energy spent creating these gardens. I have planted hundreds and hundreds of trees, shrubs, and perennials. There is no order in the sequence of the paintings represented here. Nor am I orderly in the way I work in my gardens, which are just three dimensional paintings, made with earth and plants. The gardens weave in and out of the white ash, buckthorn, and cedar bush. I weave in and out, changing and altering, pulling out, putting in, over and over to make it feel right, as I do with paint.

Notes: Ms. Devlin will be exhibiting a selection of her work in preparation for her solo show at the end of May, held in her studio in Burritt’s Rapids

Susan Foley Floorcloths

Location: Foyer, Burritt’s Rapids Community Hall

About:  When I first discovered painted canvas floorcloths, I was an antiques dealer in Montreal during the 80’s & 90’s.  I filed the idea away and satisfied the art itch by integrating decorative painting techniques into my business and decorating services with great results.

My move to Ontario in recent years presented a “carpe diem” moment as I downsized my antiques business and chose to enter full-on painting floorcloths. I paint cloths and offer workshops to the public. It’s art you can walk on.

About: Burritt’s Rapids is home and where I pursue my photography business while still working full-time in Ottawa. Living adjacent the Rideau Canal many hours are spent on the river and my camera is never far out of reach. I love being in the natural outdoors and wildlife photography is my passion. Broad landscapes, the rolling sea, a soaring eagle… In truth, I love it all, beauty is everywhere, one merely needs to look.
